Ashton Memorial Folly and Butterfly House.

For the 1999-2000 season we are offering the following packages for the school visits
Discovering Mini-Beasts

Take a journey through the world of small animals. Experience at close hand the butterflies and all their life stages in the tropical environment of the Butterfly House.
Then on to the Mini-Beast House where other invertebrates, amphibians and small reptiles can be viewed through glass. After these move on to the Free Flying Bird Enclosure where a variety of foreign birds (British bred), can be observed. The journey finishes with a walk around the Conservation Garden where, depending on the weather and the time of year, British birds and insects may be seen.
A member of our staff will accompany you in either the Butterfly House or the Mini-Beast House, to tell you about the inhabitants and answer any questions about them.

Cost per child: £1.50

For an extra 50p per child, a staff member will accompany you throughout and focus the tour on one of the following:

A. Fitness for Survival -

The variety of living processes
This will focus on the factors affecting animal survival, especially feeding, reproduction, camouflage and behaviour with special reference to the animals being viewed.

B. Who's Who -

The variety of Animal life
This will focus on the diversity of animal life. Examples from invertebrates, reptiles and birds will be used to highlight differences in body structure and life cycles between animal groups.

Mini-Beasts without Butterflies

For those who are already very familiar with butterflies and their life stages, why not come and see our collection of other invertebrates, reptiles, amphibians and birds? These animals can be used to examine different life cycles and reproductive strategies.

Group of 71-90 90 mins 3+30 mins or 4+20 mins

To get the most from your visit, we now have a Teacher's Guide giving information about all the animals in our collection, price £2.99. Teachers may also take advantage of our Teachers Free Familiarisation Offer when a member of our team of keepers will explain the tours to you and give you help and advice on your visit. Lunch room facilities are available on site - booking is recommended.

To avoid that mad scramble in the gift shop when your group visits we can offer a selection of childrens' "Goody Bags" at various prices. Please ask for details.

The Maths Trail

Suitable for children up to 15 years.
Price 50p per booklet (25p if booked together with one of our guided tours as detailed above)
The Orienteering Course
Suitable for children over the age of 9 years (Teacher supervision recommended).
£1.00 per map.
