Butterfly House In the Butterfly House upto 30 different species of tropical free flying butterflies may be seen in the summer season. Although a tropical climate can be experienced throughout the year, the short days and low light levels of the winter months cause a reduction in the number of species which can be seen at this time. Those species present throughout the year include, The Owl, The Postman, The Glasswing and The Castor Angle. The other stages of the butterflies lifecycle, egg, caterpillar and chrysalis can be seen on the plants but many are well camouflaged so look for the "caterpillar alert" signs and half eaten plants. Our emerging cabinet contains a selection of different chrysalises and if lucky you may get to see a butterfly crawling out of the chrysalis case and stretching its wings out before being able to fly. Butterflies feeding, flying, resting, mating
and egg laying can be observed with time and patience. Children on school trip |
